Museum
of Fine Arts
The museum of Fine Arts of Rennes is, like most of the
museums of France, a revolutionary creation. Constituted
in 1794 from works seized in the religious and civil buildings
of the city, the museum obtains most of its wealth of
the fabulous cabinet of curiosities of Christopher Paul
de Robien, president of the Parliament of Bretagne.
This encyclopaedic collection was one of richest of Europe:
Egyptian, Greek and mainly Celtic paintings, sculptures
and antiques and objects of art coming from all the continents,
as well as an exceptional set of drawings and works of
Leonardo Da Vinci, Botticelli, Durero and Rembrandt.
